The original tested Cheddar Melt was introduced in the Midwest of the United States in 1985. It was a 1/3 pound burger with fried onions and cheddar sauce on a rye bun.

The Cheddar Melt was a Quarter Pounder topped with grilled onions, teriyaki sauce and cheddar cheese sauce on a rye bun. Usually as a Supersize meal.

It was originally introduced in 1988 and removed in the same year, then revived in 2004 and subsequently shut down in the same year, and hasn't returned ever since.
