The cheeseburger is a burger similar to a regular hamburger, but with a slice of cheese added under the top bun. McDonald's cheeseburgers were previously promoted in commercials using the McDonaldland character, Mayor McCheese. It is topped with American cheese. Traditionally, the slice of cheese is placed on the meat, but the burger can include many variations in structure, ingredients, and composition. The term itself of the words "cheese" and "burger." The cheese is usually added on a cooking hamburger patty shortly before the patty is completely cooked which allows the cheese to melt. Cheeseburgers are often served with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, mustard, mayonnaise, and ketchup.

In fast food restaurants, the cheese used is typically american. When cheese is added to a burger, the nutritional value of the burger can be changed substantially.

Due to it's small size, McDonald's cheeseburgers are normally sold by two per meal.
