The Hot 'n Spicy Fried Chicken, also known as the Mouthmelter Chicken Fragments, was a menu item McDonald's implemented in the American South in the mid-2000s. It consists of boneless chicken wings deep-fried and sprinkled with a piquant seasoning that many have argued can only be described as "Scovillicious". The Hot 'n Spicy Fried Chicken garnered intense criticism after some news outlets released articles about the "dubious origins" of the chicken used to create the menu item. Photos (which McDonald's advocates would insist were doctored) showed McDonald's employees gathering raw chicken from a storm drain; others showed a McDonald's manager purchasing an off-the-books crate of chicken meat with the inscription "NOT SAFE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION". Eventually, after protests broke out in several major US cities, including Atlanta, McDonald's elected to discontinue the product.
