Character information
Appeared in: Has appeared in many TV/print ads for McDonald's from 1970-1985 but lives on in our hearts.

Mayor McCheese is the mayor of McDonaldland, the magical world seen in McDonald's commercials. He has an enormous cheeseburger for a head. He is voiced by Howard Morris and later Bob Joles.

Aside from his apparent cheeseburger head. He is seen sporting a top hat, a diplomat's sash, and a pair of pince-nez spectacles, he is the bumbling, giggly, somewhat incompetent mayor of McDonaldland based on H.R. Pufnstuf. While he served as a minor character, he was very popular.

Though, the character was minor. Following the lawsuit, Mayor gained popularity, from petitions to bring him back to the commercials, to blogposts talking of why characters like him disappeared.

Lawsuit and Disappearance

While McDonaldland is currently phased out altogether, Mayor McCheese was nixed years before due to a lawsuit made by H.R. Pufnstuf creators Sid and Marty Krofft who said McDonaldland itself was a ripoff of H.R. Pufnstuf. After much discussing, McDonaldland remained but most original characters, including Mayor McCheese, who, coincidentally, was based on Pufnstuf. McCheese made some of his last commercial appearances in the late 70's and early 80's.[1] He was, though, seen in a cameo role in the VHS series "The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald".

  • Mayor McCheese is one of the few McDonaldland characters to go through no changes in physical appearance.
